I have much to be happy about.
It's Friday.
It's the end of a week of Security+ training. All week, I've been inundated with stuff I need to know for certification. The final assessment exam I scored 81%, which should be good enough for me to go and consider taking the actual test. I think I'm going to wait a week before I do that, because this coming week is busy.
Speaking of busy. Monday will mark 8 years of marriage. Yes, you heard that right. We've manged to stay together for 8 years and not kill each other...yet. (just kidding, love)
Happy also to be full of gyoza, sushi, and Kirin Ichiban.
I'm going to be a lump on the couch for the rest of the evening, if anyone wants to reach me... |

Inconceivable!!!
But wait, it's true. Some of you may know of my recent "very long" work days. Well, it seems that someone on the Government side took notice, and was genuinely pleased with that. This person wrote a detailed memo to my PM, thanking the Unix team for all the hard work in making the project successful, and giving much more than was originally expected to get it done.
Alright, so, someone said something nice. But it gets better. Word got back to the company I work for. This, too, is a "good but so what" kind of thing. The "what" came in the form of $250 in AMEX gift cards as an "attaboy". Yes, the company I work for said they take good care of their employees. I've heard that line before. Last time I got anything like that it was $100 and a "written warning for poor performance". So, I take the line with a grain of salt.
No salt here, it's all sugar, baby! Ok, I'm sticking with this company. In less than 2 months they've treated me better than pretty much all my former IT employers have combined. |

...but I didn't realize just how dirty it was.
This year, Comcast sponsored (read: "threw money at") Dragon*Con for the privilege of putting up their banners at the con. I am no fan of Comcast, even though they are pretty much our only choice for high-speed internet where I live. But when I read something like this, I just...I have no words.
While out of one side of their mouth, Comcast says they are working to improve customer relations, they are playing dirty pool with other service providers. I've been happy with DirecTV for over a decade now, and I have no reason to switch. I support DirecTV and their stance to drop Comcast rather than give in to what appears to be little more than extortion and greed. |

And this is where I admit that even I sometimes fail to measure properly. It seem the blade for my lightsaber doesn't fit in our luggage. Not at all, it's not even close. I am sadfaced. I don't get to play with my toy at con this year. Only choice would be to ship to the hotel, and at this point it's practically an overnight shipment. Too much to be reasonable. Unless I want to think about hand-carrying it. But I'm not sure how the TSA would take to it.
*sigh*
This is me not being annoyed, with myself. |

Yeah, 22 hours at work. This is the sort of thing that makes me want to reconsider a lot of things. But the good news is that, barring a phone call from my manager to the contrary, I will be off today and tomorrow. Well, it's either that, or having something close to a 60 hour week. And while I do get paid for the hours, it does little good if I'm too tired to enjoy any of it.
And a big thank you to tirani, for staying up late (even though I didn't come home until 6:30 am), leaving the light on, and making coffee for me this morning. This is the definition of ORE*.

I think the only good thing I can say about District 9 is that I didn't have to pay for the movie ticket. More accurately, it was a waste of good popcorn. I think it's the first time in my life I have ever willingly walked out of a movie.
"Hey, it can't be as bad as the Dungeons and Dragons movie." And she was right...it was worse. We at least stayed for all of the Dungeons and Dragons movie, even if we were quoting lines 10 minutes in.
I'll leave this with a simple statement, I was disappointed. |

Well, it seems I'm mostly over the flu-like whatever I had hit me on Friday. Fever finally broke Sunday afternoon, and my temp has been normal since. Still a bit congested, and coughing a little. But I'll bet that will take a couple of days to clear out. Today is chilling and getting myself back up to strength.
Looks like I'm back at work tomorrow. |

Friday I came home from work, chilly and achy, to find I had a temperature over 101. Not how I wanted to start a weekend that was supposed to be time for me to chill, relax, maybe do a few chores. So, I took a couple of Motrin and a hot bath. Didn't fix the fever, but it did fix the aching. So, I managed to get some food into me and collapsed on the couch for the evening.
Today, the fever has broken, but my sinuses are still a mess, and my chest is full of crud. I'm thinking a good dose of NyQuil before bed might just kick the last of this out of my system. Meanwhile, I still need to get grocery shopping done. Don't know if it's going to happen. |

Just got a phone call that confirms my work start date of this coming Monday, August 3. Sure, it's about a week later than I had hoped to start working, but I will be working. This is now absolutely confirmed. So, the little voices in the back of my head that have been nagging me about how it's all going to go "Kablooy!" are now silenced.
Feeling a little more relaxed now, thanks. |

Dunno if this is real or not. But considering the source, I could believe it.
Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for confirmation to start work. It's all resting in the hands of a government worker who needs to sign off on paperwork. Being summer time, I don't expect them to make it a priority. But really, how hard is it to confirm information in a computerized system where it is routinely done in a matter of seconds? Or is this just sitting at the bottom of a pile with no motivation to get it done? |

Looks like work is not starting tomorrow for me. Gotta love it when someone's ability to work hinges on one person signing off on paperwork, and that person doesn't consider it important. Ah well, the joys of Government Contracting work. Hopefully they'll get word tomorrow that the paperwork is all in place and I can start on Wednesday.
I wanna be working now, kthnxbye. |

Or in this case, 2 companies. It seems company number 2 has come up with enough money to make that plus working a little overtime to put me at least back at what I was making originally, if not a bit more. Advantages include medical benefits with a real insurance company, not COBRA or some previously unheard of company. Also, no 12-hour shifts on Sundays. That's a BIG advantage. I don't know what the long-term ramifications will be of this, but I firmly believe that this is the right choice for me an my lifestyle.
The other company did not take the news well. I've now been accused of being unprofessional, and leaving them in a lurch for filling the job. But ya know, sometimes you just have to accept that you aren't offering optimal working conditions, and that some people have to view what you bring to the table, and what's just pretty words on paper. Side by side, company one has prettier words, but company two brought more they can actually back up.
Now, if things go well, I start work again on Monday (Tuesday or Wednesday the latest). I better enjoy the next few days off, unexpected Summer vacation just came to an end.
EDIT: Work is starting on Tuesday, not Monday. But still win. |
